As the temperatures drop and the nights get longer, it’s time to get the woollens out. Snug jumpers and cosy socks….But what about your house? How about deploying wool around the house to keep that snug too? Wool is a natural insulator, trapping air in layers of fibre. It’s breathable, sustainable and chemical-free. Most of our products are moth-proofed using the unique chemical free permanent Ionic Protect from Isolena. As well as making your home more cosy, most of these products will help you save money.
It's easy to install and safe to handle. Have you seen the range?
Chimney Sheep – of course, you know all about these, I’m not going to bore you with all that 80 cubic metres of air going up the chimney per hour and all that. Just, it’s the first place to start draught-proofing if you’ve got a draughty house.
Insulation – really, I’d be surprised if your loft wasn’t insulated, but it’s good to top up, and think about under the floors if you can get under there too. It’s lovely to handle, and is made using a unique technique that enables it to keep its loft. Most other wool insulation products have other material, such as recycled plastic, mixed in to give the insulation its loft, but the clever engineers at Isolena have figured out how to make insulation out of 100% wool. It’s totally moth-proof too. It seems like a simple product, but a lot of research and expertise has gone into making it!
Door and window sealant – this is a wool version of the spongy synthetic stuff. Just unroll it and stick it in place. Simple and effective!
Wool gap filler – this is like a natural version of the squirty expanding foam, and a lot easier to use. Just unroll it and poke it in. It’s loosely bound with twine, so it stays in a continuous strand that you can just cut off. It’s perfect for poking into larger gaps such as around window frames etc. Use a wide flat thing to poke it in.
Useful bit of insulation – exactly what it says on the box! Our other insulation is sold by the pack, and sometimes people want a smaller amount for blocking the odd gap here and there, or tucking into loft corners, so we have the loose Sheep wool insulation in smaller amounts that you can just pull off and stuff in.
Wool pipe lagging – this is made from moth-proofed felted Herdwick wool. It’s robust, thick enough to be effective and pliable enough to easily wrap around the hot water pipes. Use it in conjunction with our paper tape to go 100% plastic free with your pipe lagging. This is such a simple measure that’s really well worth doing.
Cylinder jacket – If you want to go plastic free with your insulation then this is the one for you. Made of four panels of insulation stitched into organic cotton, you fit it around the hot water tank and fit a strap around it to hold it all in place. If you haven’t got a hot water cylinder jacket then you really need to get one, it’s a massive waste of energy.
Project felt – this is just really useful to use as underlay, or as a flap over a draught panel, to pin against walls….people use it in all kinds of innovative ways.
Wool rugs – draughty floorboards? Well that’s the perfect excuse to get one of our gorgeous handmade wool rugs. Each one contains the wool of several sheep, and the extra large, containing the wool from 11 sheep, is virtually like having a whole flock in your living room!

Door draught excluder – these are like sandbagging your door against the cold! Made of organic fabric and filled with local wool, these have a nice solidity about them and stay in place to block pesky draughts from under the doors. We also have a smaller version that people often use on windowsills. We can do bespoke versions of these if you need a specific length, just contact our helpful team on info@chimneysheep.co.uk.
Also have a look at the door draught excluders we have made out of coffee sacks. We get these from local coffee roasters and fill them with either Herdwick or Swaledale wool.
Herdwick wool underlay – this is a really excellent quality thick underlay made of 100% Herdwick wool, using the Ionic Protect moth repellent treatment. It is the ultimate in luxury, to go under wool carpets for a lovely springy bounce which will retain its spring for decades. If you’ve got a draughty floor then this really is the way to combat the cold.
