This Nutscene Potters' Pal, make your own seedling pots kit is easy to use, environmentally conscious and pretty fun too. It allows you to turn waste paper such as used newspapers or magazine sheets into little seedling pots that you can use to grow and transplant tiny seedlings (saving you money and time at the garden centre).
In these few simple steps you can turn a humble piece of used paper into a wonderful home for a tiny plant:
You'll need:
Scissors
Pen or pencil
Ruler
Newspaper or similar used paper
Your potters pal kit
Steps:
Measure out an area of 8-13cm x 57cm from your paper (depending on how tall you want your pot to be). Mark these measurements.
Cut out the measured rectangle
Now you have your strip of paper, wrap the strip around the Potter's Pal, then fold over the excess paper.
Push the 'Pal' firmly into the base, make sure to give it a twist.
Voila you have your little paper pot!
Make sure you fill it with a high quality peat-free compost such as our organic sheep wool compost, or even our specialist seedling compost- they contain gallons of nitrates and other nutrients, perfect for growing strong and healthy seedlings.
Now you've got everything ready to plant your seeds.
We thoroughly recommend making use of the kit in a fun activity or home lesson for children - it's the perfect set up for learning about how plants grow from seeds! In fact we have a whole range of interesting activities for families to try. Take a look at what we've got to offer in our Go Outside! range.
So, how many pots could you make?
Well, how much used paper do you have? This gadget allows you to make unlimited paper pots. In fact, we challenge you to make it wear out! You'll be able to create as many paper seedling pots as you have storage space.
One of the best things about this device is the number of resources it will save. Not only does it encourage you to recycle paper that would otherwise have gone in the bin, it stops you having to purchase tiny little plastic pots, or any little pot for that matter. By using this little plant pot maker your reducing demand for oil and gas resources, as well as reducing your plastic consumption and carbon footprint - great right? Also, all the paper pots you produce will be readily biodegradable and compostable, so you won't be adding anything to the landfill!
It's so important to reduce our natural resource consumption, whether that be through re-using or repurposing, making conscious choices to avoid plastic, or generally reducing your carbon footprint. Reducing your natural resource consumption reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, making a positive contribution towards stopping global warming, as well as the amount of rubbish in the environment.

At the core of Chimney Sheep is our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees (BLPT). For every purchase you make with us, 20% of the profit facilitates the planting of trees on agriculturally poor land in Cumbria.
We set up BLPT in 2019 as a ‘boots on the ground’ tree planting initiative. The company is run by us and the tree planting is done by us. We do it to help you and us to reduce our impact on the planet. The trees we plant reduce CO2 output as well as contribute to the reduction of flooding and the creation of habitats for wildlife.
BLPT isn’t a tick box exercise nor a distant and detached carbon offset company. In fact, this is as much part of our business as the products we sell and is an integral part of our ethos. We are big believers in the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and want to make a genuine difference
Arrived quickly. Great item for next spring instead of using plastic pots. Can’t wait to use it. My daughter has tested it out and declared it’s a lot of fun so she’ll be making hundreds for me next year.

Great way to make your own pots & sow seeds. I have found that I have needed far less compost too. Great purchase.
