Drying laundry outside is much better than drying your laundry inside for lots of reasons. Drying your washing indoors is one of the main culprits for causing damp. When left to dry inside your home, the water vapour will be absorbed by your precious furnishings, walls and upholstery. Tumble dryers are an alternative however, they are incredibly expensive to run and use up a lot of energy. Drying your laundry outside will help to reduce damp in your home and save on household energy too! It is a win, win scenario!
A typical load holds up to two litres of water that, if left to dry inside your home, will be absorbed by your precious furnishings, walls and upholstery.
Damp in the home can produce allergens, irritants, and sometimes, toxic substances. In many cases, this can cause or exacerbate many respiratory illnesses, particularly in children and the elderly. Drying your laundry outside can help to stop excess damp.
There isn’t a set answer – there are lots of factors that can affect how long laundry can take to dry outside. Humidity, temperature, how damp the laundry is to begin with, just to name a few.
A Laundry Mac™ is a waterproof ‘coat’ to put over outdoor hanging laundry to protect it from rain and intermittent showers.
A Laundry Mac™ is a deceptively simple contraption that fastens onto three and four-armed rotary dryers and ensures that laundry can dry outside effectively. A Laundry Mac™ is made from a large circle of waterproof, breathable fabric which enables vapour to evaporate off damp laundry whilst protecting it from the rain. Heavy weights are stitched into the perimeter of the Mac to ensure stability in wind and a telescopic prop is used to raise the centre like an umbrella, enabling rainwater to drain off away from the laundry.
Using a Laundry Mac™ is an eco-friendly alternative to using a tumble dryer, saving energy and helping to reduce electricity bills in many cases. For households drying laundry inside, a Laundry Mac™ provides a healthier option, reducing the risk of unnecessary damp in the home.
We do two sizes of Laundry Mac’s – Regular and Large. The Regular size fits rotary dryers that are up to 2.5m. The Large size fits rotary dryers that are between 2.5m and 3m. You can shop them both here.
Yes, very easy! To put up, hang your laundry as normal on your rotary dryer then open out the Laundry Mac™ over the washing and loop a band over each arm. Prop the Laundry Mac™ in the centre using a telescopic clothes prop so that the water runs off. Once your laundry is dry, you just need to remove each loop from each arm of the rotary dryer and hang it somewhere to let it dry. Once it is dry, you can fold it away and put it in the drawstring bag it comes with ready to use next time!
Yes, you just need to make sure you get the correct size. The Regular size fits rotary dryers that are up to 2.5m. The Large size fits rotary dryers that are between 2.5m and 3m. You can shop both sizes here.

If it’s gale force winds then it’s not advisable. A Laundry Mac™ can cope with strong breezy conditions but if the wind is trying to rip the laundry from the line then having a Laundry Mac™ over it is going to make the whole thing take off and land in the neighbour’s garden!
You can, depending on the type of rain. A Laundry Mac™ works best in vertical rain alternated with sunshine type conditions. You know those classic British summer days! If it is chucking it down with horizontal rain, we would advise you to wait until the weather has calmed down a wee bit.
Sometimes there are very high humidity conditions, in which case it’s literally impossible for laundry to get completely dry. However, it will still get a bit drier outside. It’s still worth hanging it out with the Laundry Mac™. You can either leave it outside for a bit longer in case conditions improve or bring it in a little bit damp and finish it off inside.
A Laundry Mac™ works best in spring, summer and autumn months, but you could use it in the winter providing that it isn’t too windy, too wet and the temperatures are above freezing. If you were to use it in winter, be aware that your laundry will take a lot longer to dry and may not dry completely.
If you are using a Laundry Mac™ as an alternative to drying your laundry inside, then yes it should do!
A Laundry Mac™ is a great solution to stopping birds pooing on your laundry. The large circle of waterproof fabric keeps all your laundry protected from any potential accidents that come from the sky!
In the UK, we don’t tend to get enough sun for sun bleaching to be a problem. However, in sunnier climates (oh how we wish it was like that here!), it can definitely be a problem. A Laundry Mac™ covers the laundry so will stop any sun bleaching of your laundry effectively whilst it is drying outside.
If it doesn’t fit, you can return your Laundry Mac™ for a full refund (as long as the product is in a re-sellable condition) and purchase the larger or smaller size. You can view our full returns policy here. To avoid this, we suggest you measure the diameter of your rotary dryer before purchasing.
In many cases, using a Laundry Mac™ will reduce your electricity costs as it reduces the need for a tumble dryer which can be a rather costly appliance to run.
Yes! Using a Laundry Mac™ is an eco-friendly alternative to using a tumble dryer, helping to save household energy. Each tumble dryer load can release up to 2.6kg in CO2 so by hanging your washing outside, you really are saving an awful lot of energy which in turn, will protect the environment and save you money – you can thank us later!
