Waxed cloth has kept food fresh for thousands of years — long before the fridge, let alone plastic cling film. These reusable beeswax sandwich bags are a natural, plastic-free alternative to single-use wrap, and they work beautifully.
Ethically made, sustainably sourced
These wraps come from Under The Mango Tree, a social enterprise in India we're proud to work with. The beeswax is bought at a fair price, and the bags are made by a women's cooperative earning a proper wage.
The beeswax itself comes from the Asian honeybee, Apis dorsata — the rock bee — which builds enormous open honeycombs up to 1.5 metres across, suspended from cliffs and high tree branches. Harvesting the wax is done by skilled local collectors using techniques passed down through generations, working entirely with nature. Selling their beeswax provides income to some of the most disadvantaged communities in Asia. The wax is stronger and more pliable than most beeswax used in wrap products, making these bags especially durable.
The bags are made from natural cotton printed with fun jungle patterns.
Why beeswax sandwich bags work so well
The waxed cotton is water-resistant but still breathable — a bit like a rind or a skin — so it slows moisture loss without letting food sweat. That makes it particularly good for sandwiches and bread. Beeswax also carries natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, helping to keep food fresh for longer.
To use, pop your sandwich into the bag and fold down the open end. The waxed cotton adheres lightly to itself and forms a seal.
Care & end of life
Wash in warm (not hot) water with a little gentle soap (I find the soft dishbrush from Hillbrush ideal for this), air-dry over a bottle or similar, and use again and again for a year or more. When the bag has finally done its service, it goes straight on the compost heap — not into the sea. Kind to the bees, kind to the people who make them, kind to the planet. And more to the point, they function really well.
Not suitable for raw meat, fish, or hot food.
