Soil-Loving, Moisture-Hugging, Frost-Fighting Wool
Made from 100% Herdwick wool from Cumbrian flocks, these wool tree spats are a natural, eco-friendly alternative to plastic-based mulch mats or plastic sheets. Wool has plenty of super-powers when it comes to protecting and nurturing young trees. It holds onto moisture like a sponge, keeping the soil beneath damp and hydrated for longer, which means less watering is needed and the roots stay happy. As the same time, wool is brilliantly insulation - it keeps the ground warm in frosty snaps and cool in the baking summer sun. That means your trees are better protected from extreme swings in weather, giving them the best possible start in life.
These spats are made from thick felted Herdwick wool, with a hessian scrim sandwiched through the middle. That little layer of hessian makes a big difference - it holds everything together for longer while still being fully biodegradable. There are no hidden synthetics inside meaning that when they do finally break down, they don't add any microplastics to the soil. They're tough, they're natural, and they'll likely outlast other wool mulch mats you've tried, though they won't hang around quite as long as our jute tree spats.
Because they're made from wool, they slowly release a touch of goodness into the soil as they break down. Wool naturally contains nitrogen and other nutrients, so your tree roots get steady, soil-sweetening feed over time. They shouldn't usually need help staying down around the trees, but if you do want to peg them down, why not try our new and improved Bamboo Skewers? They're nice and chunky and are particularly useful with larger mats or rolls of our garden felt.
Eco-friendly, biodegradable, insulating, water-retentive, protective, nutrient-boosting, and proudly made from 100% Herdwick wool - these mulch mats are loud and proud about what they are. A natural bit of Cumbrian hillside, repurposed to give your trees the best start in life.
