Purchasing these wool mulch mats helps to support the Himalana™ project for certified organic wool from the high valleys of the Indian Himalayas – the first certified organic herd in India! That’s really quite an achievement and a commendable operation to support.
Some of the Himalana™ sheep wool cannot be spun into yarn, so it is made into mulch mats. This adds value to what otherwise would be a waste product.
These have a slight sheepy odour to them which means they still contain pest-deterring lanolin. Studies have shown that deer avoid plants that smell of sheep, and there's anecdotal evidence that sheep grease deters rabbits and hares too.
Just as we work directly with local farmers in Cumbria, Diversity Honeys have connected with Prolana who work with the Himalayan farmers to ensure that they receive a better income for their wool.
