Produced in Yorkshire, our natural sheep wool garden felt is one of our most popular products. It is made with a thick, dense layer of wool and a layer of jute carrier material. Many other wool felts use a plastic carrier material which can leave microplastics in the soil.

The combination of the sheep’s wool and the jute means that our garden felt is:

  • The perfect mulch for no-dig gardening
  • Insulation against cold and heat
  • Textured and woolly which will deter slugs and snails
  • Hygroscopic which means that it absorbs moisture but releases it slowly, so your plants won’t need watering as often
  • Full of nitrogen, potassium and phosphate which naturally occurs in the wool and helps with strong, healthy plant growth
  • An excellent growing medium – roots love burrowing their way into it
  • 100% biodegradable and compostable within about a year so completely and utterly environmentally friendly.

The felt is 1.8m wide and is priced per linear metre. For example, if you placed an order of five, you would receive a piece of wool felt measuring 5m x 1.8m.

Please note, we are now making these rolls wider and shorter than previously, so we can pack them into boxes and make shipping more efficient. Previously the rolls were 1.4m x 15m. Now they are 1.8m x 10m.

Buy Land Plant Trees

At the core of Chimney Sheep is our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees (BLPT). For every purchase you make with us, 20% of the profit facilitates the planting of trees on agriculturally poor land in Cumbria.

We set up BLPT in 2019 as a ‘boots on the ground’ tree planting initiative. The company is run by us and the tree planting is done by us. We do it to help you and us to reduce our impact on the planet. The trees we plant reduce CO2 output as well as contribute to the reduction of flooding and the creation of habitats for wildlife.

BLPT isn’t a tick box exercise nor a distant and detached carbon offset company. In fact, this is as much part of our business as the products we sell and is an integral part of our ethos. We are big believers in the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and want to make a genuine difference

Added benefits - luxury nest lining ?

Just put some down yesterday , so I’ll see how it goes. This morning I was looking at our local blue tit population and panicked that I may have covered some of their feeding areas - then reminded myself that the garden has lots of bird-friendly areas uncovered. But I think this year, their nests will have an extra fluffy lining - luxury!

Sheeps wool uses

We bought the sheep’s wool as a protective cover for the dining room table- it works brilliantly with a table cloth on top. I’ll use the offcuts in the garden.

Might sound odd

It might sound odd but my purchase was part of a garden themed birthday present for a family member who's a keen organic gardener. Hopefully she'll make good use of the products.
The delivery was made in very good time so I'm fairly sure I'll use Chimney Sheep again.

Fall in quality

I'm very sad to have to write this as I want your brand to succeed. But the garden felt I bought recently is much poorer quality than the stuff I bought three years ago. The hessian backing is much looser and is not felted to the wool as it was before so it's much easier to tear it, there's no barrier to stop the bird/animals taking it away for nesting material, and I doubt it will last as long. In the photo - old version at the top, newer at the bottom.

The hessian scrim became the most expensive part of the product! Our suppliers wanted us to use biodegradable plastic carrier material but this can result in micoplastics so we use the wider mesh hessian scrim to produce our popular wool garden felt cost effectively. This is perfect for no-dig gardening, capillary matting, wrapping up pots, and for weed suppression if you put compost on top. If you just need weed suppression then use our recycled coffee sack jute mulch, either on the roll, or pre-cut into mulch mats.
