You know we hate waste here at Chimney Sheep, right?

We’ve mixed the offcuts from making our Chimney Sheep with Herdwick wool to create rolls of lovely 10mm thick Herdwick felt. It works as underlay but it’s just 50% moth-proofed. It’s perfect for projects, pet beds, wadding, backing for rugs….get in touch and tell us what you’re using it for, it’s a versatile material!

It is sold by the linear meter. The roll is 1 metre wide. So if you order 1 you will get a piece of felt 1m x 1m, and if you order 5 you will get a piece of felt 1m x 5m. A whole roll is 10m long.

Buy Land Plant Trees

At the core of Chimney Sheep is our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees (BLPT). For every purchase you make with us, 20% of the profit facilitates the planting of trees on agriculturally poor land in Cumbria.

We set up BLPT in 2019 as a ‘boots on the ground’ tree planting initiative. The company is run by us and the tree planting is done by us. We do it to help you and us to reduce our impact on the planet. The trees we plant reduce CO2 output as well as contribute to the reduction of flooding and the creation of habitats for wildlife.

BLPT isn’t a tick box exercise nor a distant and detached carbon offset company. In fact, this is as much part of our business as the products we sell and is an integral part of our ethos. We are big believers in the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and want to make a genuine difference

Excellent product

I bought this to use as underlay beneath rugs on wooden floorboards. It is thick and springy, easy to cut to shape with a craft knife, and is already helping to exclude drafts entering via cracks in the old floorboards. Just right, thank you 🐏

For insulating my LiFePO battery.

I need a low or zero-flammability material that will retain even the tiniest amount of heat energy a 12V) battery creates, due to self-discharge, phantom drain etc.

All batteries lose capacity in sub zero or close to zero deg C temperatures, this is well-known. What helps is to wafm or keep warm, the battery. This is much worse eith lead acid csr batteries, but on the flip side if you can hold onto the worse self-discharge energy, u will make it even warmer than lithium counterpart units.

Li-ion are more ‘dangerous’ or i would say ‘more in danger’ compared to Lithium Iron Phosphate, but suffers in the cold also.

I conducted a burn test. Did this on other allegedly 100% wool offerings by others, this came out better. I put it into s blue gas flame which is an overly aggressive and unlikely situation. Two good results: it did not propagate the flame, self-extinguishing in my small unscientific sample; and it stank while being burned.

So, i will know if it IS being attacked by flame, yet the amount of soot is low. Mostly, the swatch stayed intact but was simply converted to a swatch that was half-ash. No continuing embers.

Note, my view is they should use this stuff as the basis for insulating the likes of Grenfell towers. It is literally the opposite end of the burning spectrum to polyurethane foam. It’s all about lobbying that has meant this does not happen, not cost nor the performance characteristics of the fabric. 5 stars all the way. Take care. meant this does not happen, not cost nor the performance characteristics of the fabric. 5 stars all the way. Take care.
