Looking for the secret to a thriving garden? Look no further than Gardener's Gold! This recycled coffee chaff is the missing ingredient your plants have been craving.
But what exactly is it? It’s the unsung hero of our much loved cup of coffee. Coffee chaff is the thin flakey layer around coffee beans that’s shed during the roasting process. It’s a natural byproduct which is usually discarded, but it’s surprisingly rich in nutrients and makes for a valuable supplement for your garden!
Ours here is saved from our friends at Carvetti Coffee who also supply our hessian sacks. We hate waste and we love gardening, so we thought - why not put this stuff to good use?
We call it Gardeners’ Gold as it’s a much sought-after nutrient for plants, but it also has a nice little ring to it, don’t you think?
Why do gardeners love coffee chaff?
So why do gardeners love coffee chaff so much? For starters, it's packed with nitrogen, one of the essential nutrients plants need to thrive. This nitrogen-rich material creates an excellent natural fertiliser for gardens and flower beds.
The green thumbs among us will know about coffee fertiliser, and you’ve probably heard all the rave about coffee grounds… But coffee chaff is even better! It’s more eco-friendly because it breaks down a lot faster, plus its light, fluffy texture adds organic bulk and aeration to the soil. This helps retain moisture while allowing oxygen to reach plant roots.
We also like its delightful mild coffee aroma that makes even the best gardening experiences that much better.
Don’t be fooled by its deceiving light weight, though - a little goes a long way! It’s dry and airy, mixing well with other compostable materials.
And if that wasn’t enough, this coffee chaff also repels common garden pests like slugs and snails in your garden. Simply sprinkle around the base of plants or over your flower beds to keep those pesky critters away.
How to use coffee chaff in your garden
Recycled coffee chaff like our Gardeners’ Gold is an affordable alternative to your expensive chemical-based soil supplements. You’ll love it and we know your plants will too.
Like any natural fertiliser, use sparingly with your plants and remember that a little goes a long way. You can create a nutritious mulch, soil conditioner, compost activator and much more. Here’s a few suggestions on how you can use it:
Mix into potting soil when repotting to give an immediate nitrogen boost.
Sprinkle onto flower beds before mulching to enrich the soil and fill gaps.
Add to your garden composter to speed up decomposition and produce a richer compost.
Scatter around your fruits and vegetables to fend off garden pests and feed plants with each watering.
While Gardeners’ Gold makes an excellent garden supplement, that’s not all it’s good for. This versatile coffee chaff can also be used as natural bedding for pets and animals like chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. It works well as a biodegradable litter for composting toilets too!
We’ve even heard that some people even use coffee chaff to create natural skincare at home such as body scrubs and exfoliating soaps… But we haven’t tried that one yet to vouch for it!
Our team at Chimney Sheep would love to see how you use our Gardeners’ Gold - share the magic on social media and tag us on Facebook, Instagram or X!

At the core of Chimney Sheep is our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees (BLPT). For every purchase you make with us, 20% of the profit facilitates the planting of trees on agriculturally poor land in Cumbria.
We set up BLPT in 2019 as a ‘boots on the ground’ tree planting initiative. The company is run by us and the tree planting is done by us. We do it to help you and us to reduce our impact on the planet. The trees we plant reduce CO2 output as well as contribute to the reduction of flooding and the creation of habitats for wildlife.
BLPT isn’t a tick box exercise nor a distant and detached carbon offset company. In fact, this is as much part of our business as the products we sell and is an integral part of our ethos. We are big believers in the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and want to make a genuine difference
